Beginning orchestra is allowing students who have never had the opportunity to learn an instrument the chance to try it. We have enough violins, violas, and cellos for all the students, but we need some of the supporting supplies such as shoulder rests. When you put a violin between your shoulder and your chin, the hard edges hurt your collarbone. Shoulder rests prevent that from happening and help the students develop that security with their instruments so that they can concentrate on their fingering and bowing techniques. Helping alleviate the pain involved improves the chances that a student will stick with an instrument and develop important cognitive skills.
