My second grade students are excited about reading! Our literacy curriculum integrates social studies/science with reading skills. The picture books I have selected will be part of our classroom library. The decodable phonic based books will be part of small group reading instruction. Three fourths of the students in my classroom come from poverty homes. A motivational chant that I teach my students from the first day of school is based on the fact that books can take them places- learning to read can expand their world! Books offer them the ability to experience life outside of their individual world. The picture books will be read individually by the students and shared with them whole group to expand their vocabulary.
