Now that I am beginning my journey as a special education teacher, I am looking at how to build my classroom in the best way to support student growth and learning. One way I can do this is by getting lots of interesting and informational text in their hands! Studies show that students obtain much of their new vocabulary knowledge from being exposed to them in stories, and to get meaningful books in the hands of my students is a goal going into this year for me! I have looked through Amazon to collect books around Biology, which is a subject I will be teaching this year, as well as books about historical figures my students can learn from. I'm hoping that providing these novels will give them an incentive to learn and read, and continue to expand their knowledge base about the world.
