We begin each day at the carpet during our morning class council meeting. Students have an opportunity to share life news, achievements, celebrations, and it is the foundation for building strong relationships. It is during this time that I get to know the students more deeply and witness the students becoming more of a family each day. Having a carpet for students to sit on near the Panel, which is the focal point of the main instruction taking place within the classroom, will encourage more student engagement. This space is meant to encourage partner, whole group and small group interactions. Students will be able to share and demonstrate their thinking while being able to have their own defined space on the carpet. The Lakeshore Learning Carpet will help create this kind of atmosphere where students feel they are part of a community and where the greatest amount of learning can occur.
