These books will add to the wonderful library I have already begun to create for my students. When choosing books for my classroom library I focus on student favorites as well as classic favorites titles and authors. Each selection is made with a strong focus on finding books that feature characters of color and other underrepresented groups. Children need both a mirror and windows in the books they read. Each day my students spend time browsing through our classroom library, selecting books that speak to and excite them. This is one of their favorite parts of the day, when they choose a spot to settle in and get lost in a great book. In addition, I take time to read aloud to my students each day, introducing them to books, characters, and themes that lead to excellent and profound conversations. My students regularly get excited about a book because the character looks like them, or is going through an experience they have had. Each time this happens I am affirmed in my belief that what students read matters. These books will only further the enjoyment and love of reading I am working to instill in my students.
