In the past I've shared this novel with struggling readers. Children who have declared they did not like reading were magically hooked by this book. It is about the experience of traveling to the South during the Civil Rights Era, told through the eyes of a child. It touches on bullying, family, friendships, perseverance, compassion, and love. All of which are important lessons in life. Whenever I have had the opportunity to do a novel study with this title, we have had Socratic Seminars, book clubs, writing their own book blurbs, writing reviews on Amazon and other sites, and much much more! All of that took place with children who thought they didn't like to read. With your help, these novels will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create.
