We are requesting hands-on science investigation materials such as owl pellets and kits that will help kids explore their way through learning. Students will dissect the pellets to find the remains of what the owls hunt as prey. They will discuss specialized structures that owls have that has helped them adapt to their environments. They will use white boards and dry erase markers as part of their investigations. These materials will help students master 5th grade science standards for Heredity -- Animal Adaptations and Specialized Structures - in a fun, hands-on way. Students will investigate the specialized structures of an owl by dissecting owl pellets and identifying what type of animals are prey to owls. They will explore the remnants of the prey and identify the specific animals and how the specialized structures of the owls allow them to survive and hunt in specific environments. Students will make predictions, explore, complete research, and write about their findings. They will also create videos that show their findings. This directly supports 5th science standards for Heredity. Students will receive points based on the quality of their investigations and will receive prizes according to the number of points they earn. Prizes will be animal stuffies (to go along with animal adaptation) and crossword puzzle books to support literacy.
