Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis is the beautifully written story of a ten-year-old orphan in the midwest during the Great Depression, navigating both being on his own and a society that is prejudiced against his Blackness. This novel provides opportunities to learn about US History and Racism, while practicing important 5th grading reading and writing skills. Bud, Not Buddy is perhaps my favorite young adult novel of all time, and I cannot wait to share it with my class for our next reading unit. It is a skillful mix of tragic, inspiring and hilarious, it teaches important lessons about growing up, and it provides an exceptional window into an important time in US history.
