I meet with students daily individually and in small groups to help them with school success. Sometimes I have a student in my office before school who never eats breakfast and needs a snack. Often, I'm cleaning out student backpacks with them and helping them learn organization skills. Every class needs a folder, every assignment needs a home and when we start that routine, more assignments are turned in. Many times if the student and I don't create that system together in my office, it simply will not get done. Once we create that system, I'm able to follow-up and work with them on learning accountability. I often work with students in small groups before school, at lunch or after school. When I work with them, it is often during what would be their free time. For the students, this can sometimes feel overwhelming or like a punishment which I don't want it to be! They are in school all day and tired. On the other hand, they need that extra time at school with an adult to review assignments with them, assist them with completing assignments, help them with executive function and help them develop appropriate social skills when engaging with peers. Many students staying after school cannot get the help they need at home due to language barriers or not having adults at home until bedtime. When they come to these groups, having snacks helps to create a warm and welcoming community environment. It also keeps them from going hungry before going home for the day. It is also important to have the supplies they may need to complete projects we do together or projects that have been assigned to them during the day that they may need more time to work on.
