Over the past year and a half, I have realized that my students are checking out more manga/graphic novels from my classroom than any other type of text. I would like to give them more of a selection, as many of my reluctant readers have become immersed in this platform of reading over traditional novels. They deserve to have literature that they can resonate with, and I hope to raise money so that I can expand my classroom library with more options from the manga platform. I am hoping to raise money to purchase manga sets so that my students' newfound appreciation of literature is not lost. So many of my students leave school to return to broken homes, and the characters from these stories almost empower them. Whether it may seem ridiculous or not, the impact that manga has had on some of my students' lives is incredible. They model themselves after the protagonists, exemplifying some of the same character traits that Goku, Luffy, or even Ichigo have. I need my students to be able to better themselves, and whether it's by becoming more literate through manga, or seeing themselves as these heroic characters, I will do my best to support this need.
