The area where our school is located is considered a food desert. This means that there is no grocery store or place to access food within walking distance of the residents that filter into the school. We do not have public transportation in our city, and because of this along with high poverty rates, a large amount of students experience food insecurity. Food insecurity is when a child does not know where their next meal is coming from. Many children are only receiving food when they are at school. We also have a population of homeless students and unaccompanied youths. For all of these scenarios there are kids that are going without food to eat, and it affects them in multiple ways, one of which is academically. Having a snack to eat can help a student to focus, think better, learn better, and calm down. It is for these reasons that our students would greatly benefit from a donation of snacks.
