My students and I have been getting so excited about reading these past couple months of school! At the beginning of the year my students had no interest at all in sitting down and reading a book. Each day when students first came into class, they were given the opportunity and were encouraged to read a book in our class library. As the days, weeks, and months of school went on I could see my students building a love for reading. This makes my heart so happy! Frank Serafini said, "There is no such thing as a child who hates to read, there are only children who have not found the right book." A few months back I sorted our classroom library into AR reading levels so that my students could easily sit down and be successful in finding a book that they could read independently. This made me realize our classroom library is lacking books for my low level readers who have a small sight word vocabulary and are just beginning to read. Our library needs more kindergarten and first grade books so that my students can be successful in reading independently. My first graders, who have just learned to read, LOVE to sit down and read a book by themselves. They get even more excited when they take an AR quiz on the book and get 100%. Having this experience makes them want to read more and more but our library needs to grow for them to have that opportunity!
