Calculators are an invaluable asset in any math class room. For students who are confident in their mathematical abilities, graphing calculators can extend a student's reach into the world of numbers by providing a range of tools they can use to analyze, predict, and calculate numbers with the accuracy, precision, and pace required of real-world problem solving. For students who find themselves struggling in the math classroom, calculators can equip them with a variety of ways to present numerical information, and empower them to pursue the option that best suits the way they learn. Calculators serve to benefit math students from all sides of the academic spectrum, and the right calculator can enable all students to find real solutions to the complex problems they see in the world around them. The TI-84 Plus has been a staple of mathematics education in the US since its debut in 2004, but the $100 price tag puts it out of reach for students in low income educational environments. Students who learn on this calculator can take those skills with them into any college-required mathematics test, including the ACT, SAT, and AP exams, and will also be able to easily transfer these skills to college level math courses. Additionally, the TI-84 is featured in virtually all high school math textbooks, and benefits from a plethora of online resources, including pre-made scripts and visual guides, that other calculators do not. For all of these reasons, the TI-84 is the most versatile and reliable option on the market for students of all ages. A permanent set of these calculators in my classroom would provide the sustainable and essential support that any student in my class over the next several years might need to access the math education they deserve, regardless of their financial background.
