I teach first grade at a K-5 public school. As our district and school demographics change and our population becomes more diverse, we are working under tighter and tighter budget constraints, which makes it very difficult to get the resources our students need and deserve. My 16 first graders are a bright, lively, and enthusiastic bunch. My classroom is very culturally and linguistically diverse. My class is an ESL cluster, and about half my students are English Language Learners. The students in my room speak four languages other than English at home. In addition, about half my students come from low-income households. My kids academic and literacy skills run the gamut, from early emergent readers to students who are well above grade level. But one thing they all share is a love for good books. My kids have no shortage of energy, they're very creative, and they love to write and share their opinions and ideas. Our literacy block is the major component of our daily curriculum.
