Over 60 different languages are spoken in the Fresno homes that form the broader community around Aspen Valley Preparatory Academy's educational community. It is our goal as an elementary school to nurture admiration and appreciation for diverse cultures in and beyond Fresno by giving our students opportunities to learn directly from culture-bearers. We host live performances and presentations several times a year. In past years, our students have been awed by traditional Mexican folklorico dancers, joined in an African drum circle, grooved along with Polynesian drummers and dancers, and tapped to the sound of bagpipes with a Celtic dance troupe. These performances open our students' hearts and minds and prime them to become inclusive and understanding leaders in our community. This year, due to precautions revolving around the Covid pandemic, we are not able to gather our students together indoors, but we refuse to stop hosting the performances that we so highly value! Although we could host virtual performers, the chest-stirring thump of a djembe and the enveloping energy of Great Highland Pipes simply cannot be adequately represented by small laptop or projector speakers. Instead, we plan to host live outdoor performances! With a high-quality portable PA system, we will be able to host live performances outdoors and give our performers everything they need to share their culture with our curious student body. Performers will be able to speak over the PA system and share stories and knowledge with groups of 200 students at a time. We will also be able to amplify the sound of quieter instruments like ukuleles and flutes. With a high-quality portable PA system, our students will not miss a beat in their multicultural education!
