This is my first year at this elementary school and unfortunately our students are performing below the state average in reading. A large majority of my students are bilingual and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. My goal is to work with a group of struggling readers in each grade to bridge the gap in reading. I really want to incorporate character education into the reading groups; therefore I selected specific books to address the different pillars of character (caring, fairness, respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, citizenship). This project will not only give my students an opportunity to increase their reading skills, it will also reinforce the importance of good character.
