The Mock Newbery Bookclub will consist of fifth grade students from our elementary school, sixth grade students from our middle school, and middle school students from a neighboring school district. Students will be reading a variety of middle grade texts in preparation for the American Library Association's Youth Media Awards. The John Newbery Award is given annually to recognize the greatest contribution in children's literature in a given year. Readers will connect with students from a school in a neighboring county to critically analyze books based on Newbery criteria. We will be building a community of readers in our classrooms and virtually to other classrooms and authors. Virtual connections with authors will amplify the experience. Students will be able to engage in conversations about the writing and revising process. This brings books to life on a whole new level! Students will read and review quality literature in hopes of choosing the next Newbery Award winning book. The club will hold a celebratory breakfast in the library to view the live broadcast of the YMAs in the winter!
