"What we have loved Others will love And we will teach them how" -William Wordsworth I love reading. I am a reading teacher and I want to instill this love of reading into my 6th grade students so that they become not just reading students, but lifelong readers. I want books, in order to teach them HOW to love reading by giving them choice in what they read. There is a reader in every child. Studies prove that when students participate in an organized independent reading program, they are more likely to close reading gaps than if they only read assigned readings from the teacher. If we don't allow students to practice the skills we teach them in reading class through their own reading selections, they are losing the ability to apply what they have learned in the context of real-life situations and they will not show the growth that they could show.
