The students in Mrs. Mims' art room are working on choice based art. We are also working hard to incorporate more STEAM into our curriculum. One way we do this is having project totes in the room available for students when they complete projects and for rewards days. When students complete a project, they are allowed to then work on their choice of a project. The products selected give the students some different hands-on experiences in art, as well as some unique engineering experiences. This gives them a better comprehension that art is more than just drawing with pencil and crayon. It can be building 3-dimensional models and exploring how they work. We can use a variety of drawing materials that can be difficult to come by. Some of these materials can also be manipulated by my students that have specials needs as well. I serve a variety of students with various abilities at my school, from physical, to emotional, as well as learning. Products such as the magnet connectors, the gear connectors and straw connect kit, make it easier for my students to participate with their fellow classmates in an all-inclusive setting.
