Imagine being a 5th grade boy longing to read a biography about your soccer hero or a news article on SpaceX, but stumbling over the small English words: "from," "about," "have." Instead you drop your head, return the book to the shelf, and find a book that fits your English reading level, but none of your interests. With a sigh you pick up another book about Spot the dog and his ball. You understand it, but feel no joy or interest in reading it. If only you could read those small words with automaticity....you have the passion and resolve to read challenging texts, you just need the sight word practice. My ESOL students have experienced an interrupted schooling experience the past year that has made it hard to access the kinds of books and practice they need to improve their reading. Please help me purchase a system for them that will help them at school and at home practice and reach their goals on simple sight words, so they can build a bridge to reading and speaking in BIG vocabulary on the BIG issues and stories that engage them and empower them.
