As teachers, we are always trying to make connections with kids in order to help them learn and grow. Rita Pierson once said, "Kids don't learn from people they don't like." I need to create moments to get to know them and for them to know me. I want to use Breakfast Club as a gateway for deeper discussions with my homeroom and advisory kids. The purpose of the advisory is to give each student a teacher who will be there to help and give advice. I've had difficulty connecting with all of my students in the past and I'm hoping that by fulfilling their basic need of hunger I will be able to make connections with them that will allow me to help them. I also have an idea for restorative detentions in my class. Instead of having them sit during recess and think about what they did, we could make pancakes or musubi together and talk about why they are acting in ways that are leading them to trouble and how they can make better decisions in the future. Most importantly I do not want my students to be hungry in the morning.
