My students live in a low income area and all receive free or reduced price lunch. We also serve them breakfast because most students are not eating before they come to school for reasons these young students cannot control. The students are in grades k through 5. They have a hardened view on the world and most have been robbed of their childhood due to responsibilities overwhelming for their age group. Their education has failed them also. Their school district has given up and the test scores reflect this. Most students in these grade levels cannot read. Mastery charter school has taken over with teachers eager to make a change. A lot of time and effort has already gone into updated the building to make it a brighter, safer place for the students. New materials like books, classroom furniture, and curriculum were purchased to help this students get back on track.
