There are many benefits to having a listening center in your class. First, when your students are listening to stories being read they are developing critical comprehension skills. Second, it exposes all levels of readers to different genres and stories they may not be able to read alone, but can listen to and enjoy. Third, students are engaged and on-task because they have the opportunity to choose the books they want to listen to. Finally, below level students are given the opportunity to listen to fluent reading, learn new vocabulary and hear different intonations helping them understand the attitudes and emotions of the speaker in the story. If my project is funded, my students will have the necessary learning tools to help them become better readers because they will have a listening center to provide them this opportunity. The laminating machine will be used to preserve my students’ art work for many years and allow them to have keepsakes to cherish for the rest of their lives.
