I coach an elementary basketball team at a historic school, which the famous basketball coach/player Penny Hardaway and the famous wrestler Jerry Lawler attended. I started the team over a year ago, and we have had great success. Our kids want to be apart of something positive. I believe if you look good, you feel good...and you play good. I want to be able to get shoes for all of my players because some don't have the right shoes or their shoes are too worn out with holes in them. Working in North Memphis, our kids don't have a lot. The priorities of the parents/guardians are not great. Some would rather buy drugs than to buy decent shoes for their child. I really lack a lot of support from them, and it takes a toll on me. So to give them something as positive as shoes would probably cause me to have tears of joy. I have to take a lot of my own money and spend it on them, which limits me to get them what they need at times. Receiving these shoes would make my kids work harder in school with academics and behavior because it would truly motivate them. It would bring a joy to my students to receive some nice, beautiful shoes that they may have never had before.
