As learners in a dual language program, my students thrive on collaboration and depend upon each other when navigating not only the content but also the languages. In our classroom we focus on math, reading, and writing which lend themselves to flexible working areas. The items listed-the futon, stools, lap desks, and rug- are the beginning of our transformation into a classroom environment with flexible seating conducive to nurturing the 21st Century skills required to bring them long-term success. Receiving these items will allow us to do away with some of our traditional desks and replace them with more flexible learning areas. I can picture it now, bilingual partners having rigorous conversations around the classroom. The seating options will range from stools at a traditional table to the comfort of a futon to the expanse of the floor using a lap desk. The options will appeal to their different learning styles as well as add a sense of home to their classroom.
