As a 6th grade middle school teacher in a Title 1 school, I have embraced many science based strategies to improve student academics and build a learning community in my classroom. I have noticed, however, that there are still students who are passive and struggle academically and socially. After discussion with last year's students, I've developed a multi-pronged plan to learning that I hope will increase classroom participation and encourage more students to be active learners. Students' voice is critical to the success of a learning community, where self-expression and reflection are used to increase social awareness and enhance academic achievement. This must include those who are reluctant to speak often due to a lack of confidence or inadequate English language skills. I need help purchasing the tools that will enhance classroom learning. They include: Tool 1 - A Qball Throwable Microphone to give students a louder voice and a chance to express themselves one at a time, and in rapid succession. Tool 2 - Sticky notes and chart paper to "graffiti" the classroom with student art, written thoughts and opinions. This helps students critically think and creatively express themselves in the language with which they are comfortable. Tool 3 - Dry Erase Pockets and dry erase pens- similar to using white boards, in that teachers can get a quick glance of student learning. By inserting conversation prompts, reflection, surveys, polls, etc., students are motivated to engage in collaborative conversations. And these are recyclable and reusable. Thank you for considering a contribution to this project and allowing every voice to be heard!
