These texts will allow me to thoughtfully help students examine their own identities and lives of others within and beyond the classroom. My intentions are to prompt children to read or be read to, connect, reflect and take action as change agents. These texts can be used as mirrors, windows, and doors. When readers find reflections of themselves in literature, they are more likely to feel visible and valued and therefore more engaged in the reading experience. Some texts affirm our lives, while others provide us a window into the unfamiliar. My hope is these texts will prompt students to consider new ideas and new ways of thinking and see themselves as a part of a larger community. These texts can help students build empathy and cultivate compassion by providing them a view of lives beyond the one they have. This new view can open a door to facilitate action and change. Ultimately, these books will offer a shared experience for all students in a classroom community to consider how ways of being can be a mirror, a window and ultimate a sliding glass door connecting their lives and the lives of others as they move between worlds.
