This year, our curriculum is focused on what it means to be an outsider and how to stand up for the outsiders in our communities. Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai is the first book we read as we learn how to do close reading, analyze characters, and explore our own experiences with being an outsider. The book tells the story, in verse, of a young girl fleeing Vietnam and provides insight into a very different cultural experience. It's a beautiful book to share with my students the joy and accountability of having a book to hold in their hands, to write their thoughts in, to highlight or draw, and then to keep for their very own libraries.
