Our 21st century students are faced with school days and standards that have increased focus on classwork and reduced time for physical activity and outside play. For today’s kids, shorter recess time can make class time harder for students who are energetic and eager to move. I feel that active seating can leverage our kids’ natural desire to move in a way that supports their learning and focuses that activity into a positive classroom experience. I have experienced this firsthand by incorporating both traditional seating and yoga balls within my own classroom, and would love to expand my students’ options for active seating. To this end, wobble stools are the newest evolution of active seating, and allow the student a firm but movable surface that encourages their natural motion. Wobble stools provide a means to use energy positively, in both physical and mental ways. I would utilize the stools alongside traditional seating, yoga ball seating, and floor cushion seating, to allow my students multiple and diversified ways of spending their time in the classroom. By incorporating more active seating options, students will be more engaged, and will more actively participate in classroom activities. In addition to being endlessly beneficial for the inclusion of children with special needs, active seating would also provide a great variety of learning settings for my classroom. The day to day function of the classroom will evolve in a fun, and distinctly varied way, and I am excited to pursue this opportunity with my students!
