My students attend 9th grade at Hartford Public High School (the second oldest continuously operating school in the United States), which is a neighborhood school in Hartford, Connecticut. As a low-income/high poverty urban school, my students arrive at our school from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. We have students who have come from approximately 30 different countries and speak at least 23 separate languages. The majority of our students receive free and reduced lunch, however we also have students who have chosen to travel from the suburbs to attend our school. Our school has one of the highest Special Education populations in our city and many students need extra supports to be successful. We work hard each year to prepare our students to be college or career ready, since many of our students will be first generation college students.
