If an emperor thought he could change his identity by changing his clothes, why would high school kids feel any different? As the emperor found some truth to that assumption, I hope that by providing new jerseys and shorts for my players, they will feel slightly changed as well. While I know that new practice apparel will not alter my player's performance in any measurable way, I know that to have someone put faith in you and show this by making an investment in you by putting their money behind you can really make the mental difference to a lot of the kids that I coach. They work harder than I ever remember working both on and off the field. They sometimes have to deal with snide remarks or even outright discrimination because of some of the stereotypes that come with being a kid from Star Spencer and while I watch these young people rise above these challenges again, and again, I also acknowledge that being outfitted with new practice gear can give them a boost in self-worth that I believe is well past due. My team consistently wins personally, academically and athletically and I know that they deserve this to feel that their outside matches what is on the inside. They are worth it.
