We use art materials such as markers, colored pencils, sketchbooks (that we will decorate with stickers), pens, highlighters, sharpies, scissors, erasers and pencils every single day in our special education geometry class. Students take pride in knowing that their weekly art project will be displayed throughout our classroom. I love watching my students beam with pride when they walk into our classroom and see their art on the walls, while also admiring their classmates work, too. Often times our art projects require my students to sit and remain in one place for a lengthier period of time - we have the wiggly chairs on our supply list, so kinesthetic students can still move, while maintaining focus on their art. Each day, students work with various art supplies, to enhance and make their lessons come to life. We use art to enhance our lessons on a weekly basis - this allows for my students to further their development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness. Ideally this boosts their critical thinking, while giving my students a chance to learn difficult concepts visually, making them more easy to understand. These materials will help students stay organized, increase our efficiency of transitioning from one activity to the next, and help create accountability for students as they make sure to take good care of their personalized art materials.
