A large part of third grade is making the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. My favorite way to teach students about the components of fiction is through whole-class novel studies. Together, we are able to explore the author's craft through analyzing setting, characters, plot, theme and much more! With a culturally relevant novel, students will also be able to learn about themselves and each other. I am requesting individual copies of My Name is María Isabel. By exploring the identities of characters in the novel, specifically María Isabel, we can learn how important it is to know who we are and how to appreciate everyone's identities. Community building through understanding an empathy is also a lifelong skill that we can practice through read aloud studies. Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop asserts that books should serve as windows, mirrors and sliding glass doors. It is essential that my students are able to see themselves, each other and the world through meaningful writing.
