These books will be used for interactive read alouds, where children are exposed to new ideas and experiences that they an empathize with. Not all of our children have access to picture books at home, and many are not yet able to read these language-rich books on their own. These read alouds will be a great way for students to develop socially and emotionally, while also learning about important social issues like segregation and gender norms. Every week we will be reading one of these books and children will be asked to share their noticings and feelings as they read. They'll use critical thinking skills to reflect on the character's experiences and connect them to their own.
