Many English Language Learner (ELL) students who come to my classroom have little, or no experience using technology outside of school. Compared to non-ELL students, these students don't have access to a computer or tablet at home. Most of them can only access the internet via their parents' smart phones. This is why my ELL students need as much exposure to technology as possible. Much of the coursework, projects and assessments that students do are done online with computers. These students have greater learning success when they are exposed to, and have more opportunities to practice using technology. However, because of limited funding, my program needs to depend on used 2nd or 3rd generation computers, instead of new technology to function. Having a class set of Chromebooks for my ELL students will allow them to keep up the competitive edge with their non-ELL peers and help close the achievement gap.
