I want to create a diverse classroom for the children we are serving with physical and developmental disabilities. This means building a place in which both students and teachers are accepting of all people, regardless of their race, culture or religion. This can be done through the books we read, activities we complete and lessons we teach. This project will allow me to incorporate diversity into my classroom by making a conscious effort to include books in my curriculum and library that feature diverse characters. I want our students to understand that diversity is important because the world is changing every day. Our school is the perfect place for this, as our inclusion program is already providing an experience for both typically developing children, and children with special needs, to learn together. This project will add to that inclusion effort, and also showcase and celebrate the unique characteristics of each individual child as well in their learning and play experiences.
