The students I work with will greatly benefit from tools to help improve their social/emotional awareness. The use of 2 Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablets and 2 weighted sensory lap pads will encourage calming while learning. The students will have access to social/emotional e-books and applications. Amazon currently has a 2-year worry-free guarantee for breaks on the Fire HD tablets, no questions asked. Each tablet will include 1 year of FreeTime Unlimited which provides safeguards that restrict the ability to access social media and the Internet while allowing students to access educational content. Some of the apps we will use for social/emotional learning will include: Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame; Settle your Glitter; Mind Yeti-Mindfulness for Kids and Their Adults; Social Adventures; Touch and Learn – Emotion; and Calm. These learned social-emotional skills will extend well beyond the school years. Weighted sensory items promote self-calming, balance, and increased body awareness. This is achieved through deep touch pressure. The effect that weighted lap pads have on the body is similar to serotonin, a chemical naturally produced by the body. The visible benefits are mood regulation, ease of anxiety and ease of relaxation. Just visualize the sensation of comfort that many of us experience when we receive a warm hug. This opportunity to enhance students' social-emotional learning will help children enter the classroom positioned for success. These social-emotional skills will extend well beyond the school years.
