The theme of the 3rd marking period of English 11 is "The American Dream". Over the course of the marking period, we study immigrant stories and symbols of the Dream. Of Beetles and Angels is an extended memoir describing an African refugee and his family as they emigrate to the US from a camp. The author, Mawi Asgedon graduated from and delivered the Commencement Address at Harvard. Reading OF BEETLES AND ANGELS by Mawi Asgedon will inform their understanding of how one refugee took advantage of the opportunities he got to reach and exceed the ideal of the American Dream. We do not currently have copies of this memoir but using it would enhance the literature we have available.
