Our school is introducing the Discovery Learning Model to the teachers this school year and we will be implementing the model with the students next school year. Discovery learning is an inquiry-based, constructivist learning theory that takes place in problem solving situations where the learner draws on his or her own past experience and existing knowledge to discover facts and relationships and new truths to be learned. These hands on STEM materials will support our new learning model and encourage the children to learn through play, problem solving, creativity, discovery, and open ended exploration. Each activity kit has visual aids that help guide the students and stretch their imaginations and challenges them to use their engineering and problem-solving skills. The Design & Build STEM kits are engaging building centers that teach students to look closer at real-life designs—and make original structures that use the same important elements! Created to encourage open-ended building with minimal teacher involvement, each center includes 8 photo cards showing actual bridges, vehicles and buildings, plus tons of hands-on manipulatives that invite children to build, explore & engineer. The Engineer-A-Coaster STEM kit will encourage students work together and through trial & error, students learn how the track position affects, as the disk rolls and falls from track to track & into the goal box. to build roller coaster and test their coaster. The Create-A-Chain Reaction Kit the students will encourage the students to set up a course of ramps, pendulums, hammers and more then drop a ball onto the tracks and go for the goal box! After each test run, kids will fine-tune the placement, distance and angle of each piece—getting firsthand practice with STEM concepts such as gravity, force and momentum!
