The idea of the students within the special education program at the high school level running a coffee shop is not a new idea but it will be extremely beneficial for this group. The students within the special education program in this school range from students with mild/moderate disabilities to students with severe needs in a center based program. Each student is working on academic goals that are progressing towards transition goals for independence within adult programming. These materials give the students the freedom to run a business and work on vocational skills within a safe environment. The students will have access to their peers and other adults within the school environment that will show them that they have a whole community within the school that believes in this idea. Each parent I talk to during the school year displays some concern about their students ability to work independently or be exposed to an occupation or freedom within the community. This opportunity to make money with the use of the espresso machine, coffee pots, coffee grinder, and tablet to track orders will help the students profit to use the money to access the community settings/activities. This shows the students' parents that there is a way to create these opportunities and to support the development of independence after high school.
