My kids love technology of all shapes and sizes. The love to touch it, look at it, talk about it, and learn on it. Tablets are especially great for them (and me) because they are easier to access for smaller humans. No mouse to navigate or log-in screen to read. They can pick it up, push the button, and up it opens with pictures to support their hunt for the appropriate website. It allows them self-sufficiency and me more time to hold small groups rather than assist with technology. Also, because of the challenges our kids face, they are more likely to be reading below grade level; this makes having appropriately leveled texts crucial to their reading growth. I have students who are just starting to read, but our 1st grade curriculum texts are leveled at or above grade level only. This is where technology comes in to bridge the gap. With online resources, I can create assignments and show books that are exactly aligned to each students' literacy needs. Whether they need a lower level book to practice reading independently, a specific letter is tripping them up, or they need to practice sight words, I can put that in front of them. To create a physical individual assignment and give it to each child on paper simply isn't realistic. But, with online access to curriculum of all grades levels and countless interactive websites, I can create that same differentiation.
