Studies have shown that by the time students leave third grade, more than a third lose interest in STEAM-related activities. I don't think that's okay. My goal is to build a sense of fun and community around these activities so that students want to continue learning more long after they leave my classroom. Once students are hooked, they'll keep learning, and when they keep learning, new opportunities and career fields open to them. Who knows? Maybe one of my students will be the next Steve Jobs or discover a cure for seasonal allergies! I want to build STEAM kits called Tinker Boxes to launch them on their way. I'm requesting lots of different building materials so I can hook my students' interest in this important subject. They will use building blocks and Legos to create structures that challenge their creativity, as well as to find innovative solutions to math problems. This will build not only their design and engineering skills but also their problem solving and decision making ability. These skills are crucial in the world today! Although I will use these Citiblocs, Brain Flakes, and magnetic tiles for daily challenges, they'll be used to support learning specific standards and topics throughout the year. I am so excited to see where this STEAM journey will take us! Keep an eye out, and you just might see one of Mrs. Taylor's third grade rock stars changing the world.
