Graphing calculators have been an essential part of high school math classes for years. In many districts, these calculators are provided for students to use during class time, however, the budget in my district does not allow for this luxury. Most of my students are unable to afford such an expensive school supply and later struggle when they are not as familiar with the technology. My goal is to provide my students with a classroom set of these calculators so they can learn the many different functions of the calculator and be able to apply that knowledge to solve math problems and real world situations. Today, knowing how to use these graphing calculators is essential to being successful in a high school math class, college entrance exams and college math courses. The courses that I teach (Geometry, Algebra 2 and Statistics) all require the knowledge and use of these graphing calculators. Having a classroom set of these calculators for students to practice with will enable them to at least learning how to operate one of these calculators. These graphing calculators are a required supply for my class, however, more than half of my students can simply not afford them and I cannot penalize them for that. For them to have access to a classroom set of these calculators would relieve some of the stress and burden of not being able to purchase their own calculator. This would also give me the opportunity to push their learning further and explore new topics that they were not being exposed to.
