The current playground only has a small playscape available for the children. The playscape does provide opportunities for gross motor skill development, such as climbing, balancing and sliding. However, it cannot accommodate the high numbers of students during recess, leaving many children with nothing to do. In addition, the current structure does not facilitate cooperative, creative, social play. The American Academy of Pediatrics state that "recess can provide not just health and emotional benefits, but also higher levels of attention and productivity in the classroom". My hope is to provide additional outdoor activities to enhance the recess experience for the preschool and kindergarten children at my school. The main item that I am hoping to get are sand and water play tables. I plan to use these to allow for exploration in sand and water outdoors. The students will be able to build math skills while also learning to work together to complete a task. The other items in the cart will provide a variety of activities to ensure all students are engaged and do not have a wait time while having gross motor play.
