I want our students to "travel" around the world to learn how others live. I want students from other countries to read books and see characters in those books that are similar to themselves. Books with diverse characters allow students, no matter where they're from, to read a story with characters who are similar to them. It also allows students who are native to our country to learn about children's lives in other countries. Our city is trying to heal from recent events that are frightening and potentially dividing. These books are just one piece of the puzzle to help our students learn about others and realize that they aren't so different. They may come from different backgrounds, but they have similarities that bring them together. Students will be using these books to learn about others and hopefully make us a stronger school.
