My goal is to create an environment that will encourage my students to read for the joy of reading. In order to provide this, I want to give my students the choice on where and how they would like to read their books. Our goal is to become Life-Long Readers. In building this space, we will trade in the traditional desk and chair. Yoga balls will be our “chairs,” as well as cushions and pillows on the floor. The yoga balls, and cushions allow for motion while reading because some of my students have difficulty staying still for any length of time. My students love new books. The addition of new books will need a home in the storage shelves and bins. These particular storage units allow for the books to be easily accessible to the children. Our school has a reading program that enables each child to read at their own level. A variety of leveled books helps my students find a book that is “just right” and of interest to them. Writing goes hand-in-hand with reading. I have discovered that some of my students like to work standing up at their desk or by sitting on the floor. The short legged tables allow for students to sit on the floor and have a surface to write upon. They are also a wonderful workspace for small group activities. These tables make a perfect option for those students that need a different space for completing their work in a position more suitable for the child. I believe that this flexible arrangement will make an impact upon my students reading by creating an interesting and comfortable setting that will motivate them to read to the best of their ability.
