Our classroom will use these books to promote positive character traits. Each month we will learn about a different character trait by engaging in literature. We will read, write, discuss, and participate in activities that will allow us to focus on a different character trait each month. Having high quality literature will assist all students in building a solid understanding of each character trait. Students will make text connections with one another and the world around them. Our students face a wide range of challenges at home and they need opportunities to practice: mindfulness, perseverance, compassion, courage, honesty, self-discipline, creativity, and gratitude. Having access to high quality literature will enhance each student's ability to positively connect with others in and out of school. At the beginning of the year, we will read: My Mouth is a Volcano!, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? and When Sophie's Feelings Are Really, Really Hurt. These texts will assist in introducing our classroom climate. Students will engage in activities to model appropriate behaviors and positive ways to interact with one another in our classroom. After students read Salt in His Shoes: Michael Jordan in Pursuit of a Dream, they will write about a time they had to show perseverance to overcome a challenge. Through the use of relevant texts, students will engage in a wide range of activities and meaningful discussions each month to promote student growth. I believe the titles I have chosen in this project will be of interest to a variety of children with assorted academic skills and can help my students increase their exposure to a variety of positive character traits. The titles will be available in our classroom library all year allowing students to revisit their favorites.
