This year I want to make the main focus of literacy on tolerance. After watching riots today in Virginia involving white nationalists who don't want the confederate statue removed, I can't believe the hate that still runs in the blood of certain "hate groups." In the world today, we need to teach ALL students to live peacefully and have not just tolerance, but the ability to help each other. These stories and books have so many excellent examples of struggle, courage, and survival. It is important that we not only gain knowledge, but also share and express our feelings about these stories. It is very important that I empower my students to have a voice and take a positive stand against hatred of groups not just in America, but in our global world.
