My students come to school, eager to learn each day. I try to make learning fun through a lot of hands-on activities, fun books, and games, where they don't realize they are learning! Worksheets and books are great, but kids need a variety of ways to stay interested and practice what they've learned. My students need an iPad to use during speech sessions to reinforce their newly learned skills. There are apps my students and I can use to listen to their speech sounds and determine if they did it right. Other apps tell stories and we can work on answering questions about the story, retelling it in order and describing what's happening using new vocabulary. My kids love to play iPad games and show off what they've learned in speech. I will also use this iPad to try out communication apps with my students. Many students who can't use their voice, can learn to use an app that says a word when they point to a picture of it. There are many apps with different advantages and disadvantages. Some apps help kids produce full sentences by touching each word, others are very simple to get important messages heard like 'I need a break.' Our district allows kids to use communication devices through the day to get their needs and wants met. This iPad would be used to test out apps with each student to find a good fit. I can't wait to hear what my student says have to say!
