I'm typically a "Type A" teacher who strives from structure and organization, but this year I took a leap of faith and implemented flexible seating in my classroom. Letting go of assigned seats and allowing my students to choose where they learn best has been transformative for students ability to take responsibility of their own learning experience. The data doesn't lie! Research shows that flexible seating improves: participation and behavior, core strength and posture, attention and focus, calorie burn and energy expenditure. Currently, my students can elect to sit on a wobble stool, stability ball, or traditional chair at standard height tables or can use a scoop rocker or floor pillow to sit at a low table. These options are great! However, I've noticed two issues with our current seating options. The first is that other than the traditional chairs, none of the options provide support for student's backs. The "Gaiam Kids Balance Ball Chair" can be used at the standard height tables and has all the positives of a stability ball, but also combines the benefits of an office chair. For the low tables, the "Soft Rockers" allow students to rock with foam through the seat and back for comfortable support! The second issue comes during our small groups or independent practice time. Students love to spread out around the room, often taking a pillow to find a spot on the floor. Rather that students hunching over clipboards, "The Surf Lap Desks" will allows students to have their own desk anywhere.
